Ambience

"The American restaurant is never merely a place to eat. It is a place to go, to see, to experience, to hang out in, to seduce in and to be seduced," writes John Mariani.

This favorite quote of Deborah Norman's about the way a restaurant should look and feel points to how The Rue's ambience has changed over the years. "We have softer, warmer colors now," says Deb of the restaurant's recently refurbished look, which includes lots of wood and plenty of cozy booths. "It's casual, it's friendly, it's neighborhood. We are the only place around town that's a white-tablecloth restaurant at night and also serves breakfast."

The delicious breakfast and attentive service combine to make The Rue a perfect place for morning business meetings, small or large, and many business people take advantage of this five days a week.

The Rue's bar clientele consists mostly of professionals who come in after work to enjoy cocktail hour at the bar, appreciating the quiet, casual ambience and low-key background jazz.

Lending an authentic "rue" feeling to the bar area is a wall-to-wall mural (below) of a French street scene from the early 1900s, which Deb commissioned a RISD student to paint for her.
